behind you, they’ll have to adjust as you dart in and out of the fast lane. But not so with the McLaren 720S Spider. Front visibility is expansive with a low, sloping hood. The front tires are easy to place. The flying buttresses in the rear are made from tinted glass, which makes blind-spot checking a cinch.
For me, the 720S/Spider are either 1a or 1b as the best car in the world, alongside the Ferrari 488 Pista. But I like my supercars streetable and trackable in the $300,000 range. The 720S Spider is $315K, and it’s a tad more for Luxury and Performance trims.
Like the 720S Coupe, the Spider gets “hydraulically interlinked continuously variable dampers” that remove the need for conventional antiroll bars. It instead uses hydraulic antiroll bars that have a low warp stiffness. That means big, single-wheel inputs like potholes are absorbed while the general roll stiffness is still high. That doesn’t mean that the suspension or steering feel is numb, though. Arizona’s crappy roads were felt all over the interior, but we’ll get to that shortly too.
Inside the dihedral doors are two leather-trimmed, slim buckets; a push-button transmission; a naked steering wheel with paddles; and an iPad-size central screen with home and volume buttons below. Like the 600LT Spider I also drove, getting in is easier than in the coupe with a hand sling on the window frame.
It’s comfortable, even after a few hours driving and another half hour sitting as one of Arizona’s finest thought it prudent to stop the Aztec gold supercar running along at a blistering 81 (about two-fifths of the 720’s top speed) mph. He asked for insurance and registration, I passed him the spec sheet thinking maybe that would beg some questions. He had none, except for asking if Beverly Hills, Michigan, is really where I lived. I predict internet driving school in my near future.
But back to visibility. The trick part is the one-piece top, which folds away in just 11 seconds and has electrochromic roof glass that darkens to 90 percent with the touch of a button. I want every window in my house to be made out of it. The narrow A-pillars also help when cornering at speed.
